  Durie family fonds

These photographs and papers document one Toronto family’s interests and pivotal experiences. They reflect practical matters (financial records, wills), family ties (particularly correspondence between William Arthur Durie and his family during his service in World War I), creative pursuits (manuscripts of poetry and a novel), social events (greeting cards and invitations), home life (photographs of family members and their home), and other aspects of life. Fonds 1065.

Three men in Canadian Armed Forces uniforms sit on a bench and smile at the camera. There is a small table with a potted plant beside them, and a backdrop of canvas behind them. The ground seems to be grass, so they may be in a makeshift photographer's studio in camp.

A fine-featured woman in her forties wears her wavy grey hair gathered on the back of her head. She is wearing a light-coloured blouse with a large dark bow on the front and a high ruffled collar held by a dark ribbon. The front of the blouse is exposed, and on her collarbone lies a large, heavy locket held around her neck on a thick wire.

I am feeling pretty well and hope you will arrive safely at Home. Give all the love I have to dearest Helen, will try and write every day to you though it may be a little difficult, it is very quiet. With all the love I have, your loving son William. Letter No. 1
