The Lobbyists’ Code of Conduct
Anyone lobbying public office holders of the City of Toronto must follow the provisions set out in the Lobbyists’ Code of Conduct, (PDF) which is Article VI of the Lobbying By-law.
You should read the Code of Conduct in full before lobbying. (Don’t worry: it’s short.)
It says you must be open, honest, ethical and professional while dealing with public office holders. It also lists a few things you can’t do. Did you know you can’t lobby during a charitable, public, or community event? Or that you can’t provide entertainment or offer gifts of any kind to a public office holder?
Finally, you must inform your employer or organization (if you’re an in-house or voluntary lobbyist) or your client (if you’re a consultant lobbyist) of your obligations under the Code.
