- Over 50% of Toronto residents are foreign born;
- Over 43% are visible minorities;
- We have a growing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, estimated at 10%;
- We have a growing Aboriginal population;
- Toronto's residents represent over 172 countries of origin and over 100 languages are spoken regularly.
(Note: Toronto's population accounts for 22.9% of all visible minority persons in Canada and 42.4% of visible minority persons in Ontario.)
The face of Toronto Long-Term Care Homes and Services has changed markedly in recent years, aligned with the growing diversity in Toronto's communities. No longer are our homes places of residence solely for seniors - our long-term care homes are the home of persons of all ages - anyone over eighteen (18) years of age who require the care and services we provide.
Our homes have multiple informal and formal relationships with community groups representing and advocating for the interests of seniors from a specific population group. We welcome these alliances, as we believe strongly in collaborative models of care, working in partnership with community groups to enhance quality of life for residents and clients.
Our values identify our strong belief in diversity practice. We embrace and promote diversity as strength. We value, respect and benefit from each other's unique qualities, background, ethnicity, culture, language, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, disability, values, lifestyle, perspectives and interests.
We know that diversity has many faces - it includes promoting, valuing, respecting and fully benefiting from each individual's unique qualities, experiences and perspectives. We know that diversity practice means inclusion, understanding and appreciating the values, beliefs, customs, lifestyle, perspectives and interests others bring and how these differences contribute to the richness of our society.
We welcome your input, involvement and volunteerism in continuing to build diversity practice while enhancing the quality of life for residents and clients.
