The Toronto Animal Services mobile spay/neuter clinic is bringing accessible spay/neuter services to the clients and communities that need it most. Our program has been operating since 2016 and has sterilized over 8,000 animals.
Our services are targeted to cats and small dogs of low-income residents who cannot otherwise afford sterilization surgery. Residents who provide proof of household income less than $50,000 will be prioritized and qualify for reduced or waived fees.
Before booking an appointment, please ensure your pet is eligible for the program. Please also ensure that you have reviewed our procedures, so you are prepared on clinic day and know how to take care of your pet after surgery.
Program Services
When your pet visits the SNYP Truck (mobile clinic), they will receive more than just a spay/neuter surgery. Unless otherwise indicated or discussed at drop-off, your pet will receive the following on surgery day:
- Pre-surgical exam
- Sterilization surgery
- Core vaccines (if no proof of current vaccines)
- Microchip
- Nail trim
- Tattoo (small green line next to incision to indicate sterilization)
- Post-op pain medication for dogs (cats receive medication at the clinic)
- E-collar to take home
Note: Non-core vaccines such as Feline Leukemia (FeLV), Bordetella, and Leptospirosis are not available on the SNYP Truck.
Eligibility and Booking Criteria
Before applying, please review the following important information:
- You must be a resident of Toronto
- This program is only for cats and small dogs under 30 lbs
- Animals must be between 3 months and 7 years of age
- Animals should be in good health
- We do not accept purebred or exotic breeds due to increased anesthetic risk
- Animals may be refused on the day of surgery if anesthetic or surgical concerns are noted on the intake exam
- Clients must be prepared to wait outdoors. The check-in process can take up to an hour. In cold weather, clients should have transportation arranged so pets are kept warm after surgery.
- Be prepared for potential clinic cancellations in inclement weather.
Note: The SNYP Truck prioritizes clients who cannot otherwise afford sterilization surgery for their pet. Whenever possible, we encourage clients to have their pet sterilized through their regular veterinarian. This clinic operates at a much higher volume than a typical veterinary clinic. Because of this, we only accept young, healthy, and low-risk patients into the program.
In certain circumstances, dogs over 30 lbs, animals older than 8 years, and higher-risk surgeries may be scheduled for sterilization at our North or East stationary clinics. Because our stationary clinics are busy serving our shelter populations, rescue partners, and feral cats, bookings at these locations are selective and there may be a longer wait time for appointments. You may also be considered for the stationary clinic if your pet is at risk of breeding and you have no other means of sterilization
Book an Appointment
To apply for SNYP services follow the below steps. If you qualify for our services, we will contact you to book your appointment.
Step 1: License Your Pet. You must live in Toronto and have a current City of Toronto dog or cat licence to use SNYP Truck services. To request reduced or waived fees for household incomes of less than $50,000, complete the Reduced/Waived Fee License Request Form.
Step 2: Complete the SNYP Appointment Request Form.
Step 3: Wait for Contact. Toronto Animal Services Staff will contact you within one week of receiving your completed form.
Note: Please do not call or email to follow up on your appointment or to ask about wait times. While we do our best to accommodate all eligible applicants as quickly as possible, wait times may vary depending on demand and clinic availability.
If you are unable to complete the application online or need assistance, contact us:
What to Expect on Surgery Day
Before you come
- Do not feed your pet breakfast. No food after 10 p.m. the night before surgery.
- Pets under four months may have two tablespoons of food in the morning.
- Water is always allowed.
- Clearly label the top of the carrier with your pet’s name and your name.
- Ensure you have watched the post-operative care video.
- If your fees are waived, please bring proof of government assistance or a T4.
- Dress appropriately for the weather, as the check-in process may take up to one hour.
Arrival and Check-In
- Arrive at the SNYP Truck at your scheduled time. Please be prompt so you don’t miss the initial group talk by the veterinarian.
- This is a group check-in. Everyone will leave at the same time once physical exams are complete. There is no need to stress about your space in line.
- If the weather is bad, cat carriers will be placed in the truck immediately.
- Individual check-in and paperwork will then be completed for each patient.
- At this time, you will sign a consent waiver confirming you understand the risks of anesthesia and surgery and agree to follow aftercare instructions.
- While the veterinarian performs physical exams, everyone will wait outside the truck. You may wait in your car, but please keep your eye on the door and come out when carriers are being returned.
- When exams are completed, the carriers will be returned. If the veterinarian has any concerns with your pet’s health, they will speak to you at this time.
- Payment or verification of waived fees will also be completed at this time.
- Note: If paying cash, we do not have change.
- Take your carrier with you and return promptly at 3:30 p.m. for pick-up unless otherwise instructed at intake.
- Important note: The owner listed on the paperwork must be present at drop-off to sign the consent form. If the owner cannot attend, consent must be signed in advance and the owner must be available by phone.
Dog-Specific Information
- Dog check-in will take place after all cats have been examined.
- Dogs must arrive on a leash (no carrier required).
- If your dog has ever shown aggression, please bring a muzzle and notify staff before the exam.
- Owners typically accompany their dog onto the truck during the exam.
- After the exam, dogs receive a sedative injection, which takes about 20 minutes to take effect. Owners are asked to wait with their dog (outside or in their car) during this time.
- Dog pick-up is typically between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. Staff will call with an exact time once your dog has recovered from surgery.
Cat Pick-Up
- Cat pick-up is at 3:30 p.m. unless otherwise advised.
- Bring your carrier to the truck door (ensure it is still clearly labelled).
- You will receive discharge paperwork, and your cat will be wearing an e-collar.
- Please arrive on time, as the truck must depart promptly after pick-ups.
Important Safety Notes
- In cold weather, ensure you have transportation home. Pets should not be exposed to cold temperatures after surgery
- Dogs cannot walk home following surgery
- Follow all instructions provided in the post-operative care video
- Do not call the emergency after-hours number unless there is a true surgery-related emergency requiring immediate veterinary care
For post-op concerns, contact us during daytime hours by calling 416-338-6281 or email spayneuter@toronto.ca
Registration Fees
Regular fees are:
- Male cat: $56.50
- Female cat: $79.10
- Male dog: $90.40
- Female dog: $146.90
Residents who show proof of household income of less than $50,000 will qualify for subsidized or waived fees.
Please note:
- It is not safe for dogs larger than 30 pounds to be spayed or neutered as there is not enough room to move a large dog under anesthetic.
- If an owner needs help with a large dog, we will try to accommodate the dog in our shelter clinic or refer them to another clinic.
- There is no indoor space where owners can wait with their pets.
- In the winter, clients who don’t have transportation to and from the SNYP truck can only book small dogs or cats that can be carried (by owners or in a carrier). The animal needs to be kept warm after surgery, so it is not advisable to walk home.
Support for Social Service Agencies
We welcome partnerships with social service agencies to ensure we are reaching the clients that need us most.
If you are a social worker and have clients with pets in need of surgery or vaccines, reach out to us at spayneuter@toronto.com and indicate that you are booking on behalf of one of your clients.
Typically our services are reserved for pets that are also getting sterilized. However, clients referred through a social worker are also eligible for wellness appointments.
Wellness appointments include a physical exam, core vaccines, microchipping and an antiparasitic/dewormer. These appointments are typically booked between 2 to 3 p.m. on
regular SNYP days. We welcome social workers to accompany their clients to the clinics.
If your agency has many clients with pets needing services and you would like to start a more formal partnership, you can email johanna.booth@toronto.ca. It may be possible for us to set up a wellness clinic on site or bring our SNYP Truck to your location, provided parking is accessible.
We look forward to working together to help Toronto’s people and pets!
