News Release
June 1, 2026

This June, Toronto Fire Services is marking Fire Safety Awareness Month with a strong focus on helping seniors stay safe at home. This month, the City of Toronto also observes Seniors Month, an annual celebration honouring the valuable contributions older adults have made to their families and communities.

Recognizing that older adults face more than double the risk of injury and death due to fire, Toronto Fire Services will be out in the community throughout June delivering educational fire safety presentations designed specifically for seniors. The initiative aims to provide older adults with the knowledge and resources needed to prevent fires and respond effectively in an emergency.

Throughout the month, Toronto Fire Services will host a series of fire safety presentations in partnership with Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation, Toronto Public Library, City community centres and local seniors’ groups. Sessions will take place in numerous locations across the city and will provide practical and accessible fire safety education tailored to older adults.

Working with Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation, Toronto Fire Services’ staff will also conduct door-to-door outreach in seniors’ residential buildings to share important fire safety information in person with residents and to answer questions on the importance of installing and maintaining smoke alarms, safe cooking and smoking, home escape planning, and lithium-ion battery safety. This, along with other programming for seniors, highlights the experiences of older adults and the supports needed for aging in place.

Seniors are one of the fastest-growing segments of Toronto’s population. In 2025, there were 29 serious injuries and fatalities suffered by seniors in residential fires, an increase from 18 in 2024. Fires can happen quickly, and having an escape plan along with working smoke alarms can make the difference between life and death.
