New development signs are used to promote new building developments, such as condominiums, townhouses or other new homes. These signs are a-frame design; self-supporting structures, shaped like an “A”. New development signs require a permit from the City.

Sole proprietorships (individuals), partnerships or corporations.

For a sole-proprietor application submit:

  • Photo identification
  • Proof of work status
    • Canadian Birth Certificate
    • Canadian Passport
    • Citizenship Card/Certificate
    • Permanent Resident Card
    • Social Insurance Card/Certificate
    • Study Permit
    • Work Permit

For a corporation application submit:

If you are applying as a signing authority for a corporation, please submit all corporation requirements as well as One (1) piece of Government issued Photo Identification for the signing authority and a letter advising of signing authority (Sample Letter of Signing Authority) on corporation letterhead, signed by a director of the corporation and dated within 30 days.

For a general partnership application submit:

All applicants are required to submit:

  • Provincial Business Name Registration or Franchise Agreement Declaration*
    *Franchise Declaration can only be submitted if you have an executed Franchise Agreement
  • Certificate of Insurance – minimum $2,000,000 coverage limit
  • Letter of Authorization from Property Owner that must include start date (dated within 30 days of application submission)
  • Photo of sign or replica of sign design (front and back) with measurements (in meters)
  • Master Site Plan
  • Site Plan or Survey of Location**

Additional requirement(s) if the applicant does not own the sign:

  • Information of the sign owner/sign manager

Site Plan Requirements

  • Business name
  • Location of each sign
  • The distance between each A-frame sign and the distance from each sign to the nearest street line, sidewalk, intersection, crosswalk, pedestrian crossover, corner, traffic light, driveway and street furnishings
  • Be displayed on the sidewalk
  • Be displayed so that no more than five signs relating to the same development are on the same side of the sidewalk
  • Be displayed so that no more than two signs relating to the same development are on the same block
  • Be displayed no closer than 100 metres from any sign promoting another development
  • Not be displayed adjacent to any residential property;
  • Not be displayed adjacent to an area where parking is permitted at the curbside

Applications need to be submitted online. You cannot apply for this licence/permit in-person.

In-person services are available at the Licence and Permit Issuing Office, 850 Coxwell Avenue, 3rd Floor.
You must bring hard copies of all application requirements. Applications will not be started unless all requirements are provided. Digital copies of documents will not be accepted.

Payment can only be made by debit, credit or cheque. Cash will not be accepted.

Walk-in services are available for new applications Monday through Friday at 850 Coxwell Avenue, 3rd Floor from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Fee

New development signs: $281.94 per sign, plus HST. 

Development signs are used for new building developments, such as condos or new homes.

  • One application is required per development
  • Maximum 10 signs per development
  • Maximum five signs within 10 metre span
  • Maximum two groups per intersection
  • 100 metre separation between groups
  • Development must be approved (rezoning)
  • Not permitted where there is on-street parking
  • Cannot be higher than 1.2 metres
  • Sign must be removed once the development has completed construction

Your permit will expire annually on the anniversary of the date that the permit/licence was first issued. A renewal notice, identifying any documents required to renew the permit/licence, will be mailed to the address on file.

  • New development sign permit renewal fee $281.94 + HST

If documents are not received; please note that your permit/licence may be cancelled, and a new application will be required. Please ensure you submit all renewal documentation and fees.

Existing licensees must renew their licences via a new online renewal portal. Licence renewal fees can be paid online or by sending a cheque.
