Introduction
The City of Toronto is committed to cleaning our air and the environment through efforts to reduce vehicle-caused pollution – the source of approximately one-third of Toronto’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
Electric vehicles generate significantly fewer emissions from their tailpipe than conventional internal combustion vehicles.

What the City of Toronto is doing
- In November 2009, City Council approved The Power to Live Green: Toronto’s Sustainable Energy Strategy. This bold strategy features a series of recommendations, including a call to explore how electric vehicles can fit into Toronto’s broader sustainable transportation plan.
- City of Toronto Electric Vehicle Working Group
Before the City can advance the widespread use of electric vehicles, there are a variety of issues to consider – from the number and location of charging stations, to the impact on our electricity grid and ways to support EV-friendly policies.
The City’s Electric Vehicle Working Group (EVWG), co-chaired by the Toronto Environment Office and the Toronto Atmospheric Fund, and comprised of staff from key City Divisions, is working to investigate these issues.
- Fleet Services Green Fleet Plan
Toronto's Fleet Services, through its Green Fleet Plan, has replaced more than 500 conventional vehicles with low-impact alternatives. As of May, 2011, the City's Fleet now includes one fully electric Mitsubishi iMiev vehicle and 296 hybrid electric vehicles. The City is working to acquire four Ford Transit Connects, two Chevy Volts, and two Nissan Leafs in 2011.
- Fleetwise EV300
The Toronto Atmospheric Fund’s Fleetwise EV300 Initiative supports public and private fleets across the Greater Toronto Area to jointly procure, drive, charge, evaluate and promote at least 300 plug-in vehicles by 2012.

Updates
- April 11, 2011: The City of Toronto hosted a consultation session with non-profit, academic and business partners to explore key questions surrounding the introduction of electric vehicles to the consumer market, which is expected in Fall 2011. Read the summary of the results (PDF) from this consultation.
