General information
Parking
by-laws from the seven former municipal governments that now make
up the new City of Toronto are being amalgamated. Until then, all
by-laws previously approved by the former governments are still
in effect. Information will be updated as new parking by-laws are
approved by the Toronto City Council.

Parking
considerations
Toronto
Police, through the Parking Enforcement Unit, give consideration
under a variety of circumstances upon request of individuals and
groups. Consideration numbers are issued which permit withdrawal
of infractions involving prohibited parking areas, expired meters,
three hour limit or parking in excess of permitted time. You can
call the Customer Service Section any time, seven days a week and
leave a message and phone number where you can be reached during
the day. Someone will return your call during business hours, Monday
to Friday.

The Parking
Tag Operations unit is able to deal with questions and concerns
about parking tags by telephone, fax and mail. For example, obvious
errors, on-street parking permits, Accessible parking permits,
stolen vehicle and defective meter complaints.

Individuals
who have Diplomatic Immunity Status must submit all parking infraction

Tour
buses
Tour buses may pick up and discharge passengers in permitted
areas only; however, they may not park in contravention of the
bylaws.

Nursing
agencies/ compassionate service agencies
There
is no legal exemption for this, however, Parking Tag Operations
may consider withdrawal of parking infractions for offence numbers
1, 2, 5 (excluding rush hour) and 6 if the tag is accompanied by
a letter from an official on letterhead explaining that the vehicle
was being operated by a staff member while performing duties for
the organization. The letter must have an original signature and
must include the title and telephone number of the authorized writer
(Nurse, Manager, etc.)
Official
vehicles and utility vehicles
(includes Canada Post, Bell Canada, cable companies, public utilities
and communication companies)
There is no
legal exemption for this. However, Parking Tag Operations may consider
withdrawal of parking infractions 1, 2, 5 (excluding rush hour)
and 6 if the parking infraction is accompanied by a work order and
a letter from a management official on letterhead explaining that
the vehicle was being operated by a staff member while performing
duties for the company and that no other parking was available,
and the situation was of an emergency nature.
Note: Official vehicles and utility vehicles are required to park legally
whenever possible.
Accessible
permits - disabled persons parking permits
If you
have difficulty walking, you can apply for a Accessible Parking
Permit. The application form for the permit can be acquired from
Ontario Ministry of Transportation by calling 416-235-2999.
The eligibility of an applicant needs to be certified by a licensed
chiropractor, physiotherapist, osteopathic physician or occupational
therapist.

Delivery
All drivers
on delivery are advised to use "ON DELIVERY" signs as
officers are informed to use discretion when a sign is displayed.
Delivery drivers are responsible for their own parking requirements
at/or within the vicinity of their place of business. All drivers
are instructed to obtain legal parking whenever possible to maintain
the flow of traffic.
In order to
be eligible for withdrawal of a Parking Infraction Notice while
on delivery, the following must be provided:
- \A letter
on letterhead (type) from head office noting the Parking Infraction
Notice number and the fact that the vehicle was engaged in making
a delivery at the time. The correspondence must be reviewed
and signed by a senior official of the firm. Photocopies of
signatures are not acceptable.
- Original
proof of delivery, i.e. waybill, invoice, delivery manifest must
correspond to the location, time and date on the parking infraction
notice.
Parking tickets
considered for withdrawal are from parking in prohibited parking
areas only. They are not exempt from rush hour routes, no standing/stopping
zones, parking meters, private property or areas that impede vehicular/pedestrian
traffic or emergency vehicles.
Taxi
cabs for hire
In order
for a taxi cab to be considered on duty, it must be in the act of
either picking up or dropping off a fare. If a taxi is parked with
the lights off, or the driver is not in the car and is not available
for hire, then it is subject to the same regulations as all other
motor vehicles. Taxi cabs are prohibited from parking for hire in
a location which is not an authorized cab stand.
In order for
taxi cabs to be eligible for the withdrawal of parking infractions,
the following must be provided:
- A completed
trip sheet for the date of offence on the Parking Infraction Notice.
- A valid taxi
cab licence from Toronto Licensing (416-392-3000) in the name
of the driver requesting the withdrawal.
Vehicles are
not exempt from rush hour routes, no standing zones, private property,
parking longer that permitted time or areas that impede vehicular/pedestrian
or emergency vehicles.

Complaints
