Learn how to register for and participate in the Shelter Management Information System (SMIS) training, as well as session dates.

How to Register

For online SMIS training, SMIS access managers must complete the SMIS New User Registration Form (opens in new window) to indicate the participant(s) and their email address. This information will be used to invite participants to the Microsoft Teams training session. Please ensure all staff details are provided and accurate, as incomplete or incorrect information will not be processed.

How to Cancel

The Agency and/or individual must submit written notice of cancellation at least seven business days prior to the training date to smistraining@toronto.ca.

It is the responsibility of the Agency and/or individual to ensure that the cancellation has been received.

Alternate Attendee

If the registrant cannot attend, an email may be sent to smistraining@toronto.ca informing Toronto Shelter and Support Services that an alternate staff will be sent to the class.

Late arrivals of 15 minutes or more will not be allowed entry into the session, either in-person or WebEx, as this is very distracting to the other participants.

SMIS Training is now being offered online utilizing the City’s Microsoft Teams platform. In order for Agency staff to optimize the training experience, the following technical requirements must be met:

  1. Bandwidth / Hardware Speed:
As this training is delivered through Microsoft Teams, please ensure participants have sufficient internet bandwidth and computer (PC/laptop) performance to support video streaming. A stable connection is required, as interruptions or lag may impact the learning experience.
  2. Video Camera:
Participants are expected to have their cameras available and may be asked to turn them on periodically throughout the session for attendance verification and engagement check-ins.
  3. Mic / Headset / Volume:
The training may include interactive components and Q&A. Participants must have a working microphone and/or headset to support two-way audio communication.
  4. Computer Skills:
Participants should have basic/intermediate computer skills, including the ability to navigate Microsoft Teams. Temporary login credentials may be provided to access the SMIS training environment, allowing participants to follow along with the trainer and, where required, share their screen.
  5. Dual Monitor Setup (Recommended):
A dual monitor setup is strongly recommended. This allows participants to view the training session on one screen while practicing within the SMIS training environment on the other, supporting a more hands-on learning experience.

Once training is completed, please wait 72 business hours from the training date before submitting the access request package to SMISHelp for processing.

Note: It may take up to 5 business days for new staff to be granted full access, including a username and password. Please do not request status updates within this timeframe.
