Heritage Toronto builds a better city by bringing people together to explore Toronto’s shared past and peoples’ lived experiences. It delivers over 80 public programs annually, including tours, plaques, digital programs and exhibitions, the Heritage Toronto Awards, the Emerging Historians program and most recently, the Equity Heritage Initiative.

Love heritage? Volunteer with Heritage Toronto as a Community Programs Assistant for the 2025 season.

Join the volunteer program and discover Toronto’s vibrant history and diverse communities. It’s a great way to explore hidden gems, meet new people, and help bring the city’s stories to life. From March to November, support walking tours and assist at special events across many of Toronto’s neighbourhoods.

Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome — no prior knowledge is needed. Just bring your enthusiasm and training and support will be provided.

Community Program Assistants (CPAs) are vital in delivering public programs throughout the city. CPAs:

  • Assist with the logistics of tours and events
  • Help ensure participant safety
  • Support tour leaders and staff members
  • Contribute to the smooth operation of tours and community events.

This role is perfect for those who enjoy engaging with the community, learning about Toronto’s heritage, and making a meaningful impact through public programs.

Hours are flexible and you can select your own shifts.

The minimum annual requirement to remain a volunteer in the program is:

  • Mandatory training (taking place in late April)
  • 10 hours at tours or community events. That is equal to three tour shifts or two community event shifts
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a keen interest in the city’s cultural, built, archaeological and built heritage
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Customer service, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work as part of a team
