Opportunity Details

The Tree Planting Captain Program allows volunteers to get hands-on restoration experience at tree planting and stewardship events. As a Planting Captain you will:

  • Attend City of Toronto public planting and stewardship events
  • Assist City staff in welcoming planting and stewardship volunteers at events
  • Assist with event-related activities including planting demonstrations
  • Learn and share information about native trees, shrubs and invasive species
  • Learn and practice different restoration techniques
  • Help create a positive environment
  • Communicate with volunteers and report concerns to staff
  • Acquire documented volunteer hours (if requested)

No expertise is required, and all tools and training are provided.

Spring 2026 Orientation Sessions

Orientation will include an online introduction to the program and the team, followed by an in-person training session where you will practice planting demonstrations. Attendance is strongly encouraged at both sessions; however, a recording of the virtual orientation will be available, as well as on-site training at your first event.

You must be at least 18 years or older to participate. Contact greentoronto@toronto.ca with any questions or to request accessibility support.

Cancellation Policy

An event will be cancelled if there is a 70 per cent or greater chance of thunderstorm or if other hazardous weather arises.
