Swansea’s women firefighters rolling hose May 12, 1943 Photographer: John H. Boyd City of Toronto Archives Fonds 1266, Item 84978
A special Air Raid Protection group, these Swansea firefighters were thought to be the only women’s auxiliary fire fighters in Canada. They trained every Wednesday night, and studied firefighting (including how to fight incendiary bombs) and first aid. At the time the photograph was taken they didn’t drive the fire trucks or handle ladders because that was “heavy work,”but they planned to practise using the ladders during the upcoming summer.
