When the 48th Highlanders marched from their home at the Armouries on University Avenue to the new army training camp on the Exhibition crowds, thousands lined the street to watch. The Highlanders were accompanied by their full brass and pipe bands, and their mascot, Kinross, a Scottish staghound.

A special Air Raid Protection group, these Swansea firefighters were thought to be the only women’s auxiliary fire fighters in Canada. They trained every Wednesday night, and studied firefighting (including how to fight incendiary bombs) and first aid. At the time the photograph was taken they didn’t drive the fire trucks or handle ladders because that was “heavy work,”but they planned to practise using the ladders during the upcoming summer.
