Notice:  The Licence & Permit Issuing Office at the East York Civic Centre is open by appointment only.  Appointments can be booked between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Businesses can apply for new licences online or you must book an in-person appointment prior to attending.  New taxicab, limousine and tow truck licence applications need to be submitted online and cannot be submitted in-person.

Existing licensees can only renew their licences via the Business Licence & Permit Renewal form. Both licence application and renewal fees can be paid online.

The City of Toronto requires that permits be obtained for the following signs:

The processing time for a temporary sign is 4-6 weeks when all information has been provided.

Signs not requiring permits:

  • Garage Sale
  • Real Estate
  • Open House Directional
  • Community, Charitable, Religious, Schools
    • The signs are located at the site where the activity or event is taking place and where there is no existing signage; and
    • The signs are erected no more than one week prior to the event taking place and removed within 48 hours of the conclusion of the activity or event.
  • Advocacy
  • Contracted Services
  • Homebuilder Identification

If you do not obtain a permit, the sign owner or the property owner can be fined and/or charged for removal and associated costs.
