Responsibilities

  • Develops, plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates children’s garden and nature based programs.
  • Develops, coordinates, implements and evaluates Eco Camp programming in nature exploration and organic gardening.
  • Provides outdoor gardening, hiking and camp experiences for children and youth.
  • Performs administrative tasks to support the program.
  • Interacts with staff, parents, schools, community agencies and the public to provide program information.
  • Coordinates and delivers programming at community events.
  • Maintains children’s garden.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and training sessions.
  • Follows the principles of Healthy Child Development (HIGH FIVE®) in the planning and delivery of programs.

Qualifications

  • Must be minimum 16 years of age.
  • Knowledge of and experience in outdoor environmental education and recreation activities, especially for children 5 to 14 years old.
  • Educational background in environmental studies/science, education, outdoor education/recreation or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of and experience in environmentally responsible gardening practices preferred.
  • Current National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Certificate preferred.
  • Experience in working independently as well as in groups
  • Ability to work with and supervise people of all ages, especially children and youth
  • Administrative, organizational, research, and program skills
  • Good communication and public relations skills
  • Knowledge & understanding of all relevant City regulations, policies and procedures an asset..
  • Must produce original current Standard First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certifications as recognized by the WSIB.
  • You possess certification in Parks and Recreation Ontario’s Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD). This is a mandatory course that will be provided to you at no cost upon obtaining a conditional offer of employment. You will be provided with course dates and details at that time.

Job Summary

To assist in the expansion of children’s nature and gardening programs to Community Centre’s across the City. 30-40 hours per week, primarily weekdays 9am-4pm (some evening and/or weekend work will be required).

  • Researches, coordinates, produces and distributes supplies and resources for staff training, program development, promotion and expansion.

  • Assists with coordination of program staff, volunteers, partnerships, sponsorships and program documentation.

  • Experience in organic gardening and garden design.
  • Administrative, organizational, researching, budgeting and accounting skills.
  • Excellent written, communication, presentation and public relations skills
  • Experience developing and delivering staff or volunteer training preferred.
  • Knowledge of local ecology, environmental issues and Toronto’s heritage is an asset.
  • Proficiency in use of current office technology and computer applications relevant to the position (including Internet and Microsoft Office).
  • Knowledge & understanding of all relevant City regulations, policies and procedures an asset.
  • Must produce original current Standard First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR-C) certifications as recognized by the WSIB.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license.

  • Administers and oversees the delivery of Children’s Garden & Exploring Toronto Programs and Eco Camps.
  • Assists in planning, delivery and evaluation of events, drop-in programs and workshops.
  • Assists in the preparation and delivery of staff training in environmental programming (i.e. local ecology, organic gardening, children’s environmental programming and recreational policies & procedures).
  • Coordinates garden site preparation, planting, development, harvest and maintenance.
  • Assists and supports satellite garden and program sites City-wide.
  • Coordinates, administers and supports staff.
  • Performs administrative tasks to support the program.
  • Coordinates program volunteers, contacts, partnerships, sponsorships and program documentation.
  • Interacts with parents, schools, community agencies, City staff and the public to provide program information.
  • Assists with budget recording and reporting.
  • Coordinates CLASS and Fun Guide submissions.
  • Provides promotional materials, reports and supplies.
  • Assists with development, preparation and submission of proposals.
  • Coordinates research, planning, preparation and delivery of new or special projects.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and training sessions.
  • Travels from site to site.
  • Ensures staff follow the principles of Healthy Child Development (HIGH FIVE®) in the planning and delivery of programs.

Qualifications

  • Must be minimum 16 years of age.
  • Experience in developing, coordinating and supervising children’s recreational and or outdoor environmental programming, including camps
  • Administrative and organizational experience and knowledge of budget and accounting procedures
  • Experience coordinating staff and/or volunteers
  • Proficiency in use of current office technology and other computer applications relevant to the position. (i.e. CLASS Program Registration & Program Maintenance)
  • Experience developing and delivering staff or volunteer training preferred.
  • Knowledge of organic gardening, local ecology, environmental issues and Toronto’s heritage is an asset.
