Mayor John Tory presented Andy Kim with a Key to the City on the occasion of Kim’s annual Christmas show, this evening at Massey Hall.

For decades, Kim has entertained and united people through his music. Kim started his music career at age 16 and has received top industry honours including five JUNO Awards, as well as membership in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Canada’s Walk of Fame. To this day, Kim’s musical artistry is acclaimed by many who take joy in his numerous hit songs, including nine Billboard Top 40 hits such as the number one hit “Rock Me Gently” and the iconic ”Sugar, Sugar”.

Kim is also known for his charitable giving. His annual Andy Kim Christmas Show, now in its 17th year, has raised more than $2 million in support of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and many children’s charities. Kim, who has called Toronto home for more than 20 years, created a Toronto tradition that celebrates togetherness, charity and the spirit of the holiday season.

The Mayor awards the Key to the City to inspiring individuals from diverse backgrounds who embody the spirit and potential of Toronto and who have contributed significantly to civic life. The Key to the City is the highest honour that the City of Toronto grants to an individual or a group.

Mayor Tory proclaimed today, December 8, as Andy Kim Day in Toronto.
