Home Energy Assistance Toronto (HEAT) is our way of helping you to save money.
If you’re living in an older home, chances are your insulation is missing, poor or leaky. This all leads to energy loss – and lots of it!
Upgrade your home insulation and be eligible for up to $1,000 from HEAT.

HEAT funds are only available to residents who complete their home renovations between August 6, 2009* and March 31, 2011.

Why Upgrade my Home Insulation?
The benefits to upgrading your home insulation are great:
- Receive grants from the City and Province of Ontario – up to a combined $4,875!
- Reduce your home’s annual greenhouse gas emissions
- an average of 1.2 tonnes for gas heated homes
- approximately 0.5 tonnes for those using electricity
- Save an estimated $150 to more than $300 on your annual heating and cooling bill
- Increase your home’s resale value and comfort
Who can Apply?
HEAT funds are available to Toronto homeowners of low-rise residential properties including single detached, semi-detached, attached (i.e. row houses) and small multi-unit buildings (3 stories or less and maximum footprint of 600 square metres).
Grants are applicable on improvements made to insulation in your ceiling, walls and foundation.
How do I Apply?
Assess your home for energy leaks
The first and most important step is to hire a certified Energy Advisor to assess your home’s energy efficiency.
Important Note:
While the Federal government is no longer booking Home Energy Assessments for grants associated with ecoENERGY Retrofit-Homes, they will continue to book appointments and process grant applications for HEAT and the Ontario Home Energy Savings Program.

You can also save up to $150 on the cost of your assessment.
Your advisor will conduct a series of tests to create a personalized report, which will outline ways to improve your insulation, as well as other measures to reduce your energy use.
Renovate your home
Upgrade your home insulation and receive up to $1,000 from the City, plus be eligible for another $3,875 from the provincial government’s Ontario Home Energy Savings Program.
Ontario’s Home Energy Savings Program also offers additional grants for home energy improvements, from upgrades to doors and windows to toilets and heating and cooling systems.
Homeowners who have completed or booked their Home Energy Assessment before April 1, 2010 may also be eligible for grants from the Federal government’s ecoENERGY Retrofit-Homes.
Measure your energy savings and be rewarded!
Once your work is complete, book your advisor to verify your qualifying home improvements. Your advisor will submit your grant application to Natural Resources Canada, which will be used to process your grants from HEAT and the Province. No additional paperwork is required. Simply wait for your cheques to arrive approximately 90 days following your post-retrofit assessment.
