The Assembly Hall uses Cisco Webex Meetings for online classes and workshops. A few days before the class start date, the Webex meeting invite containing instructions on how to join the class is sent.

In this course, Marjan Verstappen will explain how to prepare, and how to work with acrylic, oil, gouache, ink and colored pencils, as well as the best way to combine all these techniques in a natural way. Perfect for beginners or experienced artists looking to refresh their techniques, Marjan will tell you some of her best kept secrets when it comes to creating and combining all these materials. Never fear the dreaded blank space – learn the perfect recipe to create gorgeous backgrounds for more complex paintings!

Get messy with paints, inks, paper, pastels, and any supplies you already have! Gritty and luminous plaster, delicate lace and fiber, beautiful encaustic wax or translucent acrylic medium. A list of required materials will be provided.

Learn the basics of watercolour, with a contemporary twist. Experiment and surprise yourself with the infinite possibilities that this material offers with the help of artist Marjan Verstappen. Learn how to master watercolour step by step and use it in a fun way to create unimaginable results. Learn the basic aspects of working with watercolours, such as transparency levels, water control, gradients, and paint saturation, as well as understanding the weight and precision needed to start using the brush with greater control to achieve fine details.

Once you understand the basics, it’s time to experiment by mixing the watercolours with other materials such as other types of paint, salt, chlorine, as well as homemade materials, and marvel at the results. To finish the course, create a complex illustration applying the techniques learned from the experiments you liked the most. A list of required materials will be provided.

Workshop Cancellation

  • Due to low enrolment by The Assembly Hall: 100 per cent refund or account credit.
  • Missed classes on the part of the student: make-up classes or account credits will not be provided.
  • Due to instructor emergencies/illness: make-up class provided. If a make-up class is provided, no refunds or account credits will be issued.

Withdrawals, Refunds and Credits

All registration cancellations/withdrawals must be initiated in writing prior to the start of the workshop’s second class. No refunds or credits will be considered after this date. Withdrawals will be prorated based on the date of the withdrawal, not based on attendance in the program. A $12 administration fee will be deducted per person, per workshop for all refunds, withdrawals and credits.
