Construction Hubs are a Vision Zero measure to improve road safety and coordinate the public right-of-way around areas in the city that have a dense concentration of construction activity, including:

  • private developments, such as condo building
  • capital construction projects, such as utility, water and road works
  • transit expansion projects

There are currently six Construction Hubs in Toronto.

Each area has a Construction Hub Coordinator who:

    • conducts logistical planning of the right of way
    • coordinates resources to manage work zones
    • supports developers, businesses and residents with “single point of contact” resolution
    • reviews and comments on Construction Management Plans
    • connects travellers with real-time information
    • forecasts changes in the neighbourhood and collaborates with enforcement officers
    • communicates impacts early and often and to key neighbourhood stakeholders

Each Construction Hub also undertakes a number of road safety initiatives, including:

    • raising awareness about heavy truck blind spots (more details below),
    • conducting truck routing for each development site that has specific requirements for deliveries,
    • and improving measures to reduce dust and airborne particles.

Air quality monitoring in partnership with the University of Toronto is also taking place in the Yonge & Eglinton Construction Hub.

The City is raising awareness about heavy truck blind spots in partnership with Concrete Ontario by visually depicting blind spots.

In addition, the following organizations have formed a blind spot awareness working group:

    • Concrete Ontario (RMCAO)
    • Greater Toronto Sewer & Watermain Contractors Association (GTSWCA)
    • Heavy Construction Association of Toronto (HCAT)
    • Ontario Road Builders Association (ORBA)
    • Ontario Stone Sand & Gravel Association (OSSGA)
    • Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario
      (RCCAO)
    • Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON)
    • Toronto Area Road Builders Association (TARBA)

The working group will be updating information and posters, expanding the program to more construction equipment, and more. Learn more and watch videos on the Pass Trucks Safely website.
