Food service establishments must have an up-to-date spill response plan. Owners and operators of food service establishments must:
- demonstrate that employees have received suitable training on the spill response plan
- post the spill response plan in a location accessible to all employees on-site
- ensure there is always enough clean-up equipment and supplies available
- ensure that all employees know the location of the spill response material and equipment and are trained in its use
What to Do After a Spill
In the event of a spill that has entered the sewer system or natural environment, the person responsible or the person in charge (such as the owner, operator or manager) must:
- report the spill to the City immediately by contacting 311
- do everything reasonably possible to contain the spill, for example:
- using sorbents to absorb and prevent spilled material from entering the sewer system
- protecting the health and safety of people, animals, aquatic life and the natural environment
- minimize damage to property
- clean up the spill and restore the area to its condition before the spill
- provide a detailed report on the spill to the City containing the information required in the Sewers By-law, within five days after the spill. See Spills Response for report requirements and how to submit.
- notify Ontario’s Spills Action Centre
