Do you know an Unsung Hero?
The Planning Group for the International Day of People with Disabilities invites your organization to nominate a person with a disability for the Unsung Hero award.

Here are the few rules:

  • The Unsung Hero nominee has not been previously recognized, and
  • The Unsung Hero nominee has achievements and/or contributions to the disability community or to a specific cause within the disability movement, and
  • The Unsung Hero nominee has been informed and is accepting of the nomination.

Invitation to Poetry
The International Day of People with Disabilities Planning Group invites submissions for the Invitation to Poetry event. We seek poems that explore feelings and issues related to disability. Topics could include but not be limited to growing up with a disability, caregiving, raising or looking after a person with a disability, effects of mental illness, struggles of persons with a disability, poverty and disability, achievements and triumphs.

Submission details
Submissions are welcome from people of all ages: children, teens, young, old and in between.

  1. Original, unpublished poems of up to 230 words are accepted. Entries of more than 230 words will not be accepted.
  2. Submit no more than 3 poems.
  3. Previously published works are not eligible.
  4. Submit one poem per page.
  5. Entrant's name and entrant's contact information MUST appear on each page. Please let us know if you are a young poet.
  6. A list of selected poems will be published on this website. Manuscripts will not be returned. Poets whose poetry has been selected will be contacted by telephone or e-mail.
  7. Selected poems will be announced and read by the poet or his/her representative at the International Day of People with Disabilities celebration on December 3, 2010.
  8. Entrants agree to the submission rules. Selection committee's decisions are final.
  9. Your submission means you acknowledge the work submitted is your own, and, you understand that you have given us the right to publish your poem on this website and read it at International Day of People with Disabilities celebration on December 3, 2010.
  10. The submission deadline is September 30, 2010.

Invitation to Art
The Planning Group for the International Day of People with Disabilities invites artists with disabilities to display their work at the 2010 International Day of People with Disabilities celebration to be held at Variety Village on December 3.

Submission details

  1. Only original artwork in any medium will be accepted. For example, paintings, sculpture, mixed medium, photography, folk art, jewellery etc.
  2. Only artists who have pre-registered with the Planning Group of the International Day of People with Disabilities will be permitted to display their work.
  3. You may registered by regular mail or e-mail by providing the following information:
    • the medium and dimensions of the artwork you wish to display. State how many pieces you wish to display.
    • Include your name and contact information. Feel free to send a link to your website if you have one.
  4. You will be allowed to sell your work during the celebration, but remember the Invitation to Art event is not a commercial function but rather a way to showcase and promote the work of artists with disabilities.
  5. The planning group has the right to limit the number of articles for display by individual artists and the total number to be displayed due to limited display space.
  6. Your submission means that you acknowledge the work submitted is your own and, if selected, you have given us the right to publish your photo and images of your artwork on this website.
  7. Entrants agree to the submission rules.
  8. The submission deadline is September 30, 2010.
