The Code of Practice aims to help owners and operators of food service establishments (such as restaurants, cafes, mobile food vendors and more) comply with the City’s Sewers By-law and mandatory grease interceptor requirement.

By following the Code of Practice, you can prevent fats, oils and grease from entering and damaging the sewer system and environment.
The City may carry out inspections, examine records or other documents, or take wastewater samples. If your food service establishment causes a sewer blockage, the City may bill you for the cost of repair. Violating the Sewers By-law can lead to fines of up to $75,000 for an individual and up to $100,000 for a business.
In addition to the Code of Practice, food service establishments must also ensure they comply with all applicable laws, regulations and licensing or permitting requirements. In the event of any discrepancy between this Code of Practice and any applicable federal, provincial or municipal legislation or regulations, the federal, provincial or municipal legislation or regulations, including the Sewers By-law, shall take precedence.
