Overview

The Transit Construction Mitigation Fund provides funding to Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) and non-profit organizations for initiatives that support local business that are impacted by transit construction. This program is funded by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

Objectives

The program provides funding to local business communities impacted by sustained transit construction projects on main street business communities, assisting BIAs and other eligible not-for-profit organizations to advance local, community-driven initiatives that will help to mitigate construction impacts through implementation of effective, innovative and creative solutions.

The program goals are to:

  • Support local businesses impacted by major construction works
  • Encourage the development and testing of innovative and effective construction mitigation strategies and expand their use across the City of Toronto
  • Pilot and showcase innovative, scalable construction mitigation solutions to challenges faced by BIAs and local business communities.

Funding Available

Grants are available up to $10,000, $25,000 or $50,000 for projects that meet eligibility requirements.

Eligibility

Eligible Organizations

The Transit Construction Mitigation Fund program is available to the following organizations:

  • Toronto BIAs
  • Not-for-profit organizations including business associations and registered charities with strong local business involvement.

Applicants must be in good standing with the City of Toronto and a good track record with compliance grant funding requirements with previously funding projects.

Please note: For-profit businesses including sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations are not eligible to apply.

Eligible Projects

BIAs and not-for-profit organizations are eligible for grants of up to $50,000 for a range of initiatives, such as:

  • Business engagement initiatives
  • Marketing and branding of the local business community
  • Creative event activations
  • Placemaking.

Projects must support businesses impacted by sustained transit construction, including the Eglinton Crosstown, Finch West LRT, Ontario Line, Scarborough Subway Extension or Yonge North Subway Extension. Visit Transit Expansion for more information on active and planned projects.

Eligible applicants:

  1. Must solicit feedback on their proposal from staff prior to applying, through one of the following ways:
    • Attend an online information session listed below
    • Arrange a 1-on-1 consultation
    • Share a draft proposal via email at tcmf@toronto.ca for feedback.
  2. Download the budget template. Applicants must complete this official budget template and upload it to their online application.
  3. Apply by completing the online application below.

The deadline to apply is March 19 at 5 p.m.
