A School Safety Zone is a designated stretch of roadway which includes school safety zone signs and a variety of measures such as watch your speed signs, improved pavement makings, flashing beacons, among other possible improvements.

Since approval of the Vision Zero Road Safety Plan in 2016 rate of implementation of school safety zones has been accelerated twice, leading up to the most recent commitment of completing 80 school zones per year and the ultimate goal of implementing enhanced pavement markings and signage to all public elementary and secondary schools in the city.

159 schools will receive School Safety Zone treatments in 2019. This includes 66 partially completed schools from the 2018 program year with an additional 93 from the 2019 program year.
