Accomplishments at the Building Portfolio

  • Number of buildings enrolled: 12 of 12
  • GHG Emissions Intensity: 3.51 kgCO₂e/sq ft²/yr
  • Total GHG Emissions: 5,407 tCO₂e/yr

Seven per cent GHG emissions intensity reduction year-over-year

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are based on Starlight’s Scope 1 (natural gas) and Scope 2 (electricity) emissions, with a 2020 base year. Starlight surpassed its targeted 2 per cent reduction in annual GHG emissions with a reduction of 7 per cent GHG emissions intensity reduction year-over-year.

Eight per cent energy intensity reduction year-over-year

With an 8 per cent energy intensity reduction year-over-year, Starlight surpassed its targeted 2% reduction in energy from 2020-2021. Starlight completed +550 energy saving projects in 2021.

Internal Capital Improvements Program

Starlight has a comprehensive capital improvement program for all existing buildings at the time of acquisition. In 2021, we implemented 4,715 suite renovations and 880 common element renovations, including LED lighting, Energy Star appliances, Building Automation Systems (BAS), sub-metering, and smart thermostats.

Data and analytics platform for visibility into data to benchmark, set targets, and improve performance

Starlight implemented a data and information management platform to centralize utility and sustainability-related metrics. This new tool will help provide visibility into our data to benchmark, set targets, and improve performance.

Real time energy management reducing annual energy costs by $593,000

Starlight has installed +220 Building Automation Systems (BAS). 40 buildings have implemented advanced AI across the portfolio. These automated HVAC systems include a central hub to help visualize data and correct controls and processes to improve operations.

Smart electric heating platform and controls reducing electricity consumption by 10 per cent

Starlight initiated a smart building platform to combine different building systems and digital controls into one central system. We installed 17 smart in-suite systems in 2021 and have seen 10 per cent reduction in electricity consumption.
