Young Artists in Transit - East

Following a community consultation on February 26, 2013 with Councillor Janet Davis (Ward 31 Beaches-East York), Councillor Mary Fragedakis (Ward 29 Toronto-Danforth) and MPP Michael Prue (Beaches-East York), 16 youth have begun murals that will depict the community surrounding Coxwell subway station.

Two community murals will be created by 16 local youth working with professional artist Jim Bravo, and will be exhibited starting in the fall of 2013 during the renovation of Coxwell subway station.

City on the Move - Young Artists in Transit - East is a partnership between the City of Toronto and the TTC with community partners, Children's Peace Theatre and Arts for Children and Youth building youth skills in visual storytelling, self-expression and community leadership.

City on the Move - Young Artists in Transit – East continues the collaboration between Toronto Cultural Services and the TTC first established in 2009, providing young artists new opportunities to build skills and engage with their city.

City on the Move 2009 - 2010

The City of Toronto transfers and connects underground cultures with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) by creating a new artistic and audience platform for urban dance and music, visual art and performance art.

From August 2009 through the summer of 2010, this new program aims to bring your transit experience to life by regularly featuring the artistic creativity and culture of emerging and more seasoned young artists performing in a fluid, public living environment - subway stations, on subway cars, buses and streetcars.

Part of Toronto's 175th anniversary celebrations, this Toronto Cultural Services initiative offered artists ages 18 - 32 years an expanded public audience and the opportunity to make money through their art by providing an honorarium and the ability to receive donations from the public like regular TTC performers. This was the first time that dancers and visual artists were regularly showcased on the TTC.

City on the Move also featured the photography of the 10 Toronto winners of The Mobile City Toronto/Milan project - a 2008 joint initiative of The Italian Chamber of Commerce, Toronto Culture and Economic Development, which engaged youth in community building through photography in the twin cities of Toronto and Milan.

The Mobile City Project offered urban youth in both cities a platform to share their dreams and insights about urban life through the creation of digital photographs and a photography contest. The winners in each city also traveled to the other city for an exciting cultural exchange.
