Coupland War of 1812 monument unveiled

Artist Douglas Coupland (second from right) presents maquettes of his public art installation "Monument to the War of 1812," to Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone (second from left), developer Rony Hirsch (far left, Malibu Investments) and Stephen Otto (far right, The Friends of Fort York). Coupland's giant outdoor sculpture (below) was unveiled in front of an enthusiastic crowd on November 3, 2008 at the northwest corner of Lake Shore Boulevard and Bathurst Street (600 Fleet Street).

Coupland said he hoped the statue would remind people that it was the British who won the war. The unveiling helped to underscore the fact that the bicentennial of the War of 1812 is just a few years away. Members of the Fort York Guard were on hand to salute the unveiling.
