Pet licences are required for all dogs and cats living in the City of Toronto and include a pet tag at no additional charge. Pet licences are valid for one year and must be renewed prior to the expiration date. Failure to license a dog or cat every year may result in a $240 ticket or a maximum fine of $5,000.

The City of Toronto has partnered with Docupet to make pet licencing and renewals faster and easier for pet owners.

Renewals

Licences expire exactly 365 days from the licence start date. You can renew your pet’s licence within 60 days of your pet’s current licence expiration date. If you renew prior to the upcoming expiration date, your pet’s new licence will start the day after expiration, not on the date of purchase.

If your pet has been spayed/neutered since your last pet licence was purchased, contact 1-855-249-1370 to adjust your pet’s profile to the appropriate status if your pet has been spayed or neutered.

Additional Policies

Refunds may be granted for a licence if a pet passes or is returned within 30 days of the licence purchase.

If you are moving with the city of Toronto, please be sure to update your address by logging into your online account and navigating to your Profile Settings page. You’ll still be able to keep your pet’s tag and access your pet’s online account. If you are moving outside of Toronto, please get in touch with the pet licensing provider in the new community to find out more information.
