Speed limits save lives. Respect the limit. Respect the lives of others.

Did you know that going 10 km/h over the speed limit means you’re three times more likely to kill someone walking or cycling?

Simply put, when you increase your speed, you increase the likelihood of causing serious harm to vulnerable road users. In support of the City’s Vision Zero Road Safety Plan and its objectives, the “Dangers of Speeding” public education campaign reminds Toronto’s residents and visitors that speeding puts lives at unnecessary risk.

Do your part to help keep Toronto’s streets safe for everyone. Respect the limit. Respect the lives of others.

Protecting Vulnerable Road Users

Speed is an influencing factor in approximately one third of fatal collisions in Canada. Higher speeds contribute to a greater risk by reducing driver reaction time, increasing vehicle stopping distance and inflicting more severe blunt force trauma on victims upon impact. For instance:

  • 30 km/h = 10 per cent likelihood of fatality for vulnerable road user
  • 40 km/h = 30 per cent likelihood of fatality for vulnerable road user
  • 50 km/h = 85 per cent likelihood of fatality for vulnerable road user

Adhering to the speed limit helps ensure the safety of all road users, including those most vulnerable like pedestrians or people cycling.

Residents in Toronto can use the tools and resources outlined in this Safe Speeds Toolkit to address speeding concerns in their neighbourhoods.
