Sewers – Manholes, catchbasins and downspouts
Manholes
The circular metal lids usually located in the middle (sometimes to the side) of the roadway are for access to manholes. They must be removed only by authorized city personnel. Unauthorized entry into manholes is dangerous and strictly prohibited. If you notice missing, damaged or noisy manholes please report it by calling 311. New square manhole-lid frames with a round lid are now being used in some locations. None of these installations in the roadway should ever be opened be anyone other than authorized city personnel.
Catchbasins
The square gratings along the gutter (edge of the road) are the tops of catchbasins which drain surface water from rain or melting snow. This drainage system empties directly into watercourses without treatment. For this reason, dumping pollutants such as oil, detergents, paint or chlorine into catchbasins is the same as dumping them into a creek or stream. Discharging contaminants into any city sewer is illegal and may result in prosecution and fine. Every Toronto resident plays a very important part in keeping watercourses clean and free of pollutants.
Downspouts
The downspouts and house foundation drains connect your house to the storm sewer and are intended for clean water only. For information on downspout disconnection programs, please contact us by calling 311.
