Ashbridges Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant – Detailed Landscape Plan for Pump House Park

Updates

Pump House Park - Final Public Meeting

The preferred draft designs for Pump House Park were presented at a public meeting on May 27, 2009.

These designs are based on comments previously provided by community members as well as site constraints. To provide your feedback on this design, please e-mail ABTPLandscape@toronto.ca.

Construction on the Skate Park at the Ashbridge's Bay Treatment Plant has been progressing. Construction is scheduled to be complete by early summer, 2009.

Skate Park Construction

Construction on the Skate Park at the Ashbridge's Bay Treatment Plant has been progressing. Construction is scheduled to be complete by July 2009. See you on your skateboard!

Soil and Groundwater Quality

Samples of soil and groundwater were collected from the Pump House Park site in 2008. Results are being used in an Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) of the area. This analysis will ensure that the preferred park design addresses any concerns with contamination on the park lands. Results of these studies, including details about how the preferred design mitigates any risks will be available at the public meetings scheduled for later this year.

Project Background

Ashbridges Bay landscape logo

In May 2003 a conceptual Landscape Site Design Plan was completed, by Diana Gerrard Landscape Architecture and architectsAlliance, for the entire Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant (ABTP).

Toronto Water is now moving forward with the design of Pump House Park, the park area located on the northwest side of Lake Shore Boulevard East and Coxwell Ave.

Pump House Park comprises two buildings used in the wastewater treatment process (known as the M Pump Station and the T Pump Station, or the M&T buildings), one softball field, a rugby field, future skate park area, and informal grass areas accessible to the public.

Goals

The goals for Pump House Park are to:

  • Significantly improve the appearance of the ABTP site north of Lake Shore Blvd.
  • Provide active and passive recreational opportunities
  • Implement ecologically-sustainable landscaping
  • public art and interpretive opportunities
  • Provide amenities that are cost-efficient to construct and maintain
  • Protect the wastewater treatment plant processes and infrastructure
Pump Station

Future plans are broadly described in the Landscape Site Design Plan (PDF), which identified this area as the Grove, representing a cultural savannah landscape. The Plan also recommended enhancing recreational opportunities including a skate park and improvements to existing sports fields. Toronto Water is also investigating the need for a new pump house in the park to increase the capacity and capability of the site to handle projected volumes of wastewater.

Time Lines

The project has five stages:

  • Stage 1: Background analysis, information update and engineering studies
  • Stage 2: Preliminary design
  • Stage 3: Final design
  • Stage 4: Contract documents and tender
  • Stage 5: Implementation of Phase 1 works

Stages 1 - 3 were carried out from June 2007 to the end of 2008. Stage 4 is currently underway. Stage 5 (implementation/construction) will tentatively begin in late October, 2009.

Get involved

A final public meeting will be held to present the preferred park design to the community. All community members are encouraged to provide feedback on this preferred design once it is finalized. The public meeting will take place in late May. Details will be posted here when they are available. To ensure you receive a personal invitation, please request to be added to the project mailing list.

Two public meetings were held during the Preliminary Design stage of the project. Click on the links below to see reports on these meetings, including materials presented:
