Items that would never fit in your garbage bin, even when it’s empty, are considered oversized. They can be left next to your garbage bin for pickup, without requiring tags or scheduling an appointment. Put oversized items 0.5 metre (2 feet) away from your garbage bin on your scheduled garbage collection day.
For information about what items are accepted and not accepted as oversized, as well as proper set out and the annual fee, visit page on Oversized and Metal Items. You can also check the Waste Wizard to learn if an item is considered oversized or not and see instructions on proper set out.
There is no limit to the amount of oversized items that can be set out.
Oversized items are typically collected by separate trucks (i.e. different than the ones that collect other waste).
If collection staff pick up most of the items but some are left behind, this could be due to the truck not having been able to fit all the items. Another truck should be back to collect any remaining items. Please contact 311 or submit an online service request for a missed collection if they are not picked up within 1 business day of the scheduled collection day.
Set Out Instructions:
• Furniture and large items with multiple components, moving/opening parts, etc. should be broken down, taken apart, secured or tied together so they are manageable and safe for the collection crew to pick up.
• Intact glass table/top/pane: wrap item with cardboard, thick paper, fabric or bubble wrap to prevent breakage and clearly label “glass item”.
• Broken glass/mirror/window: wrap sharp edges with thick or multi-layered material (e.g. paper, cardboard, soft plastic, fabric) and if it fits, place in the Garbage Bin. If it doesn’t fit in the Garbage Bin, set out as oversized item and clearly label “glass item”.
• For bed bug-infested mattresses and furniture, visit
Bed bug infested furniture - disposal instructions - City of Toronto. If collection staff see visible living bed bugs on furniture or mattresses, they will leave a notice asking that the item be sealed in plastic. Bed bug infested recyclables should be placed in black garbage bags and disposed of in the Garbage Bin.
