Tree removal involves topping, stemming, stumping, fill & seed and replanting:

  • Topping: removal of the smaller branches, done on larger trees;
  • Stemming: removal of the main stem and larger sections of branches that remain after topping. Topping and stemming usually take place at the same time and includes debris removal. If stemming takes place at a later date, it is usually within a few weeks of topping.
  • Stumping: grinding of the stump below ground level occurs throughout the year when the ground is not frozen or snow covered and is scheduled as time permits to maximize the efficient use of crews and equipment. Stump grinding chips away at the stump, grinding it into small pieces which gets intermingled with soil. This is the material that is removed as part of the fill and seed operation.
  • Fill & seed: this process involves the removal of loose stump material, filling the cavity with topsoil and the application of grass seed. This may be done at the same time as stumping, or it will follow a few days later; and
  • Re-planting: will be scheduled in the next appropriate season depending on the species chosen and its availability. Once a tree is planted, a mulch (wood chips) are placed around the base of a newly planted tree. The mulch helps keep string trimmers and lawn mowers away from the base of the tree and helps to retain moisture in the soil for the new tree.
