Today, the City of Toronto announced that it raised $1,345,802 through its annual employee fundraising campaign in support of United Way Greater Toronto. For the last 19 years, staff from the City and its agencies and corporations have raised more than $1 million each year.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s employee campaign was conducted virtually, including a Civic Run, Civic Gala, speaker series and special fundraising events across many work locations.
The campaign received strong support from City unions and associations, CUPE Local 79, CUPE Local 416, the Toronto Professional Fire Fighters’ Association (TPFFA), Toronto Public Library Workers Union CUPE Local 4948, CUPE Local 2998 and COTAPSA. Together, TPFFA, CUPE Local 416 and CUPE Local 79 contributed more than $10,000 to the United Way campaign.
The City of Toronto campaign also includes City agencies and corporations such as the Toronto Public Library, Toronto Zoo, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Toronto Parking Authority and Exhibition Place.
“On behalf of City Council, I want to congratulate the Toronto Public Service for a fantastic employee campaign. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need has been far greater for vulnerable residents in our city. The money raised through this campaign will ensure the United Way and its agencies can continue to do important work on the ground and help those who have been impacted by the ongoing pandemic. In true Toronto spirit, we have seen our residents come together and help one another and this campaign is a true testament to that.”
– Mayor John Tory
“City staff have demonstrated that they care about the community and residents who are impacted by COVID-19 and want to support their community. I’m so impressed with the commitment and generosity shown by our employees through the United Way campaign during these difficult times.”
