City of Toronto requests No Board Report
The bargaining teams for the City of Toronto and TCEU Local 416 – CUPE, the union representing City outside workers, have been in collective bargaining for more than four months. Over this time, the goal has been to reach a negotiated settlement that is fair for our valued employees and affordable for Toronto residents.
While a number of issues have been resolved, some issues remain, including job security, wages, benefits and parental leave.
As is the norm in the course of bargaining, in late December the City requested that the Province appoint a conciliation officer to assist the parties in reaching a timely agreement. The bargaining teams met over five days with the conciliation officer. Despite best efforts, progress on the remaining outstanding issues was not achieved.
After much consideration over the weekend, the City’s bargaining team has requested that the Ministry of Labour issue a ‘No Board Report.’ This step in the process will, the City hopes, assist both sides in achieving a fair and affordable collective agreement. A No Board Report starts the clock for a potential work stoppage beginning in the third week of February.
The City of Toronto remains committed to negotiating a collective agreement that is fair and affordable and will continue to engage with the union to achieve that goal. Talks are ongoing with CUPE Local 79, the City of Toronto inside workers.
