The City is reducing speed limits on all local roads and laneways to 30 km/h to curb speeding and minimize traffic-related serious injuries and fatalities. New area speed limit signs will be posted at the entry and exit points of the neighbourhoods where the speed limit has been reduced.
Residents may notice fewer speed limit signs on individual local streets. This does not mean signs are missing. The goal is to create a consistent system across Toronto where people driving see 30 km/h area signs when entering a neighbourhood and understand that the speed limit continues to apply throughout the local road network, and that the speed limit is always 30 km/h on local roads.
Speed is a contributing factor in approximately one-fourth of fatal collisions in Canada. Driving at safe speeds and respecting the posted speed limit saves lives.
The rollout of area local speed limit reductions is part of the City’s Speed Management Strategy as proposed in the Vision Zero Road Safety Plan. Speed reductions have been rolled out in 21 of 25 wards across Toronto and are on track for city-wide implementation by 2028.
