Home Healthcare Waste

Home healthcare waste is regular garbage with the exception of syringes and medical sharps. Although some of these items are plastic, they are not recyclable.

Healthcare waste must go in the garbage and includes:

  • Casts
  • Catheters
  • Dialysis waste (e.g. tubing, filters, disposable towels and sheets)
  • Disposable pads, gloves, masks, gowns and aprons
  • Colostomy bags
  • Gastric and nasal tubes
  • IV bags and tubing
  • Sponges

How to dispose of home healthcare waste:

  • Empty and rinse all tubes, filters and bags.
  • Put the waste inside two plastic bags.
  • Put in garbage.

These items can go in the Green Bin:

  • Soiled dressing and incontinence products

Syringes

Syringes and medical sharps should be placed in a sealed container labelled "Syringes" and taken to a Drop-off Depot. Fees will apply.
