Green Bin Program... From curb to compost

Pre-processing
Step 2: Pre-processing

Organic waste

This step removes all the plastic bags and turns the organics into a liquid pulp ready for processing by anaerobic digestion.

Organic material and water are fed into a machine called a hydropulper, similar to a large blender.

Hydropulper

The hydropulper is used to spin the organics into a liquid organic pulp and separate plastic bags and other unwanted materials.

When pulping is finished, unwanted items such as plastic or glass are removed. See how the raking process removes plastic and other light materials.

Raking Process

The residue (waste) from processing operations is sent to landfill for disposal. Placing only those items accepted in the program in your green bin helps reduce waste sent to landfill.
