Cooking programs teach recipe basics, including how to measure, prepare and combine ingredients to make delicious and nutritious food. Recipes follow Canada's Food Guide and are shared with participants after the class.

Registered activities are instructor-led programs offered as a group of multiple classes over several weeks.

Activity Description Ages
Baking and Dessert Participants learn how to make sweet and/or savory treats like cookies, cupcakes, pastries, scones, and bread. Early Child, Child, Youth, Adult, Older Adult 
Cake Decorating Available for beginner and advanced levels, participants can apply their creative skills in classes designed to teach them all about decorating cakes. You will be learning and applying techniques to make various decorative patterns. Adult
Cooking Participants learn the basics of how to measure and combine ingredients while making delicious recipes using a wide range of healthy foods. Kitchen and food safety are included.   

Activity variations include:  Vegetarian, Cultural and Skills  programs. 

Programs for younger children introduce cooking with a focus on kitchen safety.

Cooking with Caregiver These programs teach about healthy foods, the importance of kitchen safety, and basic skills like mixing and measuring with easy-to-follow recipes.  

Activity variations include: Creative Chefs and Vegetarian programs.

Workshops Single-day workshops are available for cooking programs and include specialty cooking like making pasta, pies, cookies and cupcakes. Early Child, Child, Youth, Adult, Older Adult

Drop-in activities offer an opportunity for participants to take part in a non-instructional activity at their convenience. No registration is required.

Single-day drop-in workshops are offered as part of our cooking activities.  

Enhanced Youth Spaces are supervised spaces for youth between the ages of 13 and 24, offering a variety of drop-in cooking activities. For more information, please visit the Youth and Recreation page. 

It is recommended to wear closed, comfortable shoes and to tie back long hair to secure it out of the way. Participants can sample the food during their scheduled class time. 

Dietary Needs and Allergies

Foods or supplies in City cooking activities may not be allergen-free. Before the first class, instructors will find out about allergies, dietary needs or dietary restrictions, including but not limited to: 

  • Halal 
  • Kosher 
  • Gluten-free 

      Participants can also let program staff know of any food allergies or dietary restrictions. Staff will do their best to accommodate participants’ needs. Refer to Program Specific Policies for additional information. 

      Supplies

      City cooking programs provide the utensils and ingredients needed to participate.

      “With Caregiver” Activities

      Some activities are offered “With Caregiver” option. These activities will be listed with “With Caregiver” in their title.  For all “With Caregiver” activities, the caregiver must attend the activity.

      Caregivers must be at least 14 years of age to directly supervise the child(ren).

      The caregiver is required to participate with the child in proper clothing and footwear.
