The City of Toronto offers a range of recreational music programs for individuals of all ages, interests and abilities. There are group and private programs available.

Registered activities are instructor-led programs offered as a group of multiple classes over several weeks.

Drumming Learn grip, stroke, rhythm, and hand and foot coordination for drumming. As you continue to practice and learn how to read music, you will work towards performing simple pieces. Child

Drumming: African Learn to play various drums such as djembe, dunun and talking drums using various hand positions and patterns. Early Child, Child, Youth, Adult
Drumming: Steel Pan Steel pan is a percussion instrument originating in the Caribbean, known for its melodic sound. Learn the importance of grip, strike, and aim to ensure you hit the correct notes on the steel pan.  Youth
Drumming: Tabla The tabla is a classical percussion instrument from India. Learn to play the dayan and bayan drum using various hand positions and patterns. Child
Drumming: Drum Pads Fun and fundamentals, shape this introduction to drumming on drum pads. Here you will learn hand positions, patterns, and rhythm. Child, Youth
Guitar Learn proper hold, tuning, strumming, and chords. As you continue to practice and learn how to read music, you will work towards performing simple pieces.   

Participants must bring their own guitar.

Guitar - Advanced In advanced guitar, you will work towards building your skills. Here you will continue to practice strumming and chord progressions and learn finger picking and scales.

Guitar: Electric Learn proper hold, tuning, strumming, and chords on the electric guitar.

Karaoke Come pick your favourite song and sing along with the guidance of a device that will help your notes soar. Youth
Keyboard Learn proper hand positions, basic scales, and how to read notes. As you continue to practice and learn how to read music, you will work towards performing simple pieces. Early Child, Child, Youth, Adult

Learn to DJ Learn equipment and mixing techniques to create music that inspires you. Youth
Making Music Through a variety of activities, crafts, and games, you will learn the basics of rhythm and sounds and discover how to make music Early Child
Orchestra Discovery Explore the sounds of music and the instruments that make them. Through a variety of activities, you will learn about loud and soft sounds, fast and slow sounds, and how sounds work together to make music. Early Child
Piano Learn proper hand positions, basic scales, and how to read notes. As you continue to practice and learn how to read music, you will work towards performing simple pieces. Child, Youth, Adult

Piano - Advanced Continue to practice proper hand positions and basic scales and learn more complex rhythms and the use of foot pedals. Child, Youth, Adult
Production and Recording Learn how to create beats for any style of music and how to produce music for artists using various production technologies. Child, Youth 
Singing Learn the importance of proper posture and warm-ups, as well as voice projection. As you continue to practice and develop your style, you will work towards performing in front of an audience. Child, Youth

Ukulele Here you will learn strumming, chord progressions, and finger picking.  

Participants must bring their own ukulele.

Violin Here you will learn proper posture, bow hold, bow strokes, finger placement, and tuning. All Ages (Private Only)

 

Registered music activities are offered in a group and private format. In group format, participants learn together in groups of different sizes. In private format, participants will work one-one one with a dedicated instructor who will personalize each lesson to fit their specific goals and needs. Private lessons are offered for all ages.

Drop-in activities offer an opportunity for participants to take part in a non-instructional activity at their convenience. No registration is required.

Drop-in Activities

  • Band, musicians can bring their own instruments and play together   
  • Choir, show off your vocal skills in a space where singers can come together to practice singing 
  • Karaoke, sing along with the guidance of a device that will help your notes soar 

Enhanced Youth Spaces are supervised spaces for youth between the ages of 13 and 24, offering a variety of drop-in music activities. For more information, please visit the Youth and Recreation page. 

Instruments

Participants are required to bring their own instruments, except for Piano/Keyboard programs, which provide pianos or keyboards for participants to use during lessons and Drumming programs, which provides drums for participants to use during lessons.

Music Books

Music books are provided by the facility for in-class learning only and contain essential sheet music, exercises, and other educational materials necessary for learning and practicing music.

Performances

Some programs may invite parents/guardians to the last class to see a performance put on by their child and the class. If your child’s program will contain an end-of-season performance, information will be provided by the instructor once the program starts.

“With Caregiver” Activities

Some activities are offered “With Caregiver” option. These activities will be listed with “With Caregiver” in their title.  For all “With Caregiver” activities, the caregiver must attend the activity.

Caregivers must be at least 14 years of age to directly supervise the child(ren).

The caregiver is required to participate with the child in proper clothing and footwear.
