City-issued bins must be used for all garbage, recycling, and organic materials

A service request for an additional garbage or recycling bin can be submitted online at: https://www.toronto.ca/311/

City-issued garbage, recycling, and organic bins remain the property of the City of Toronto and should not be taken to any other property.

Additional Garbage Bins
Residents will be charged an annual fee for their garbage bin whether they set out the bin/s or not, and whether or not the bins are full.  For more information about bin sizes and fees, please visit the City of Toronto website.

Additional Recycling Bins
If you currently have one extra large recycling bin and it's not enough, you can order a second recycling bin of any size. A service request for an additional recycling bin will be submitted.

If a bin was not delivered, you can submit a service request at https://www.toronto.ca

All requests for additional bins will be investigated by Solid Waste Management Services to assess the need for an additional bin. The request may be a senior who generates enough recyclables to need an extra large but cannot physically manage it and instead requires two mediums, a family who generates more than six blue boxes of material and therefore requires more than one blue bin or someone who has storage issues. If the request for an additional bin is approved, no fee will be charged. If not approved, the request will be denied.

New residents who do not have garbage & recycling bins, can submit a service request for bins online at: https://www.toronto.ca/311. Your name must appear on the City utility bill in order to make this request.

Recycling Bin upsize/downsize, additional bin requests - can only be requested by the person whose name appears on the utility bill.

Small garbage bins - raised bottom - Capacity
The bin was designed to hold the equivalent of one garbage bag. The raised floor in the small garbage bin is intentional. If it didn't, it would not be tall enough to be picked up by the collection truck.

Multi-Residential properties Up to 8 units
Multi-residential properties up to 8 units are considered the same as single-family residential properties in the property code database. There is no difference in how property taxes are calculated, even for legal duplexes.

New Residents
If you are a new occupant of a re-sale home or a resident in a new development receiving curbside pick-up without a garbage or recycling bin, you can submit a service request on-line at http://www.toronto.ca/311/ ,or you can call 311 to request new bins.

No fee will be charged for a replacement bin, however, an annual bin fee per bin will be applicable:

Moving into a re-sale home with no bins should be actioned as "missing bins" not "new account" service requests to avoid being charged for two sets of bins.

Bin exchange fees:

  • there is no exchange fee to downsizing your garbage or recycling bin
  • there is no exchange fee to upsize your recycling bin
  • Check the website for current bin fees and the fee to upsize your garbage bin(this is charged each time you up-size your garbage bin).

If you are moving to a new home:

  • Garbage and recycling bins must stay at the originating address, do not move them to your new address,
  • All the bins are scanned to the specific address they were issued to.

Residential Units Above Commercial / tenants

The owner of your building has selected your type of collection - bins or bags. It is the responsibility of the property owner to provide residents with sufficient containers for garbage, recycling and organic waste or buy sufficient garbage tags if only using bags.
