News Release
September 10, 2021

Today, Toronto Public Health (TPH) is continuing to see an increase in vaccinations since the Province of Ontario announced a proof of vaccination system.

As of September 9 at 8 a.m., 4,617,463 COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered in Toronto. In the last seven days alone, a total of 43,520 doses were administered. This includes 20,023 first doses and 23,497 second doses. This is 5,066 more doses than the total doses administered for the previous seven days when 38,454 doses were administered between August 26 and September 1 including 15,386 first doses and 23,068 second doses.

According to TPH’s vaccine dashboard updated this morning, 77.9 per cent of residents 12 and older are fully vaccinated and 83.9 per cent of eligible residents have at least their first dose.

Data shows that unvaccinated individuals, are seven times more likely to become infected with COVID-19. To protect Toronto residents, TPH is targeting full vaccination for 90 per cent of residents. In order to reach this target, approximately 328,000 Torontonians would need to get vaccinated. Of those, 163,000 have already received their first dose.

Experiences in other jurisdictions have also shown that vaccines can reduce opportunities for virus spread, community transmission and outbreaks. Given the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the community, residents are urged to begin their vaccination, if they have not already done so, or get their second vaccine dose as soon as possible. Torontonians are also asked to continue following public health measures, including staying home when sick, practising physical distancing and wearing a mask when physical distancing is not possible.

Yesterday, TPH reported 176 new cases of COVID-19. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been a total of 175,799 cases of COVID-19. There are 94 people hospitalized. To date, there have been 3,630 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. In total, 170,562 people have recovered. Case status data can be found on Toronto Public Health’s COVID-19 reporting dashboard.
