About CEAT
In February 2006, Toronto City Council established a Community Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) to guide the City’s environmental assessment for the management of residual solid waste under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. At the Toronto City Council meeting of January 31 – February 2, 2006, Council appointed 22 Toronto citizens as members of the CEAT. The Team held its first meeting on March 2, 2006.

The work CEAT undertakes flows out of work done by the New and Emerging Technologies, Policies and Practices Advisory Group, which met for 22 months starting in 2002 to review and provide advice on the adoption of new and emerging technologies, policies and practices to manage residual waste.. Having completed its mandate, this group is no longer active. View the NET archived site.
Torontonians interested in serving as members of CEAT attended one of two information sessions held in September 2005 prior to completing and submitting their applications. Members were selected by the CEAT nominating panel, made up of Deputy Mayor Bussin and Councillors Carroll, Pitfield and Giambrone. Interviews, for selection of a maximum of 25 members, were held during December 2005. Ultimately, 22 names were recommended to the Works Committee in January 2006 and approved by Toronto City Council in February 2006.
Further background information about the City's proposed waste diversion planning strategy is available on the archived site for the Waste Diversion Task Force 2010, formed in 2001 and comprised of all Toronto City Councillors. The resulting report outlines recommendations towards achieving a 'made in Toronto' solution for waste diversion from landfill.
