Hot Water
The energy it takes to heat water can account for up to 20% of your energy bill. Spending a little time to change things up will go a long way.
Hot Water Saving Tips
Here are some tips and things you can do with your current hot water heater that will help:
- Wrap your electric hot water heater in an insulating blanket (glass-fibre or foam insulation wrap); look for one at your local hardware store.
- Insulate exposed hot water pipes with pipe insulation.
- Set the temperature of your hot water heater to a maximum of 48ºC/120ºF.
- Drain about 5 litres every 3 months from your hot water heater drain tap to remove sediment and mineral build-up from the tank.
Replacing your hot water tank
Consider a tankless on-demand system, or a solar hot water system and you may be eligible for a rebate. You could even install a drain-water heat recovery system which recovers heat from hot water as it runs down the drain and be eligible for the ecoENERGY Retrofit Rebate program.
