In 2020, City Council adopted the 24-Month COVID-19 Housing and Homelessness Recovery Response Plan which outlines a plan for the City to accelerate the creation of 2,000 supportive homes and 1,000 housing benefits to create 3,000 new affordable housing opportunities in 24 months.
The City and its partners are on track to exceed these targets, and have secured capital funding to deliver over 2,300 supportive homes by the end of 2022, as well as 1,000 Canada-Ontario Housing Benefits. In May 2022, the Ontario Government committed $27 million in additional operating funding for supportive housing costs associated with buildings set to open in 2022, and committed to partnering with the City on its 24-Month Plan to provide ongoing operating funding for supportive housing units set to come online by the end of 2023. This funding builds on the $15.4 million in operating funding the Ontario Government committed in April 2021 for units set to open that year.
