The City of Toronto continues to respond to COVID-19. The Province of Ontario’s state of emergency and stay-at-home order remain in effect for Toronto and across the province. The City urges all people to respect the COVID-19 orders and stay home as much as possible to save lives by reducing opportunities for COVID-19 to spread.
Since the start of the pandemic there have been a total of 85,260 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 650 new cases. There are 473 people hospitalized. In total, 75,825 people have recovered from COVID-19. To date, there have been 2,375 COVID-19 deaths in Toronto. Today’s count includes approximately 80 cases from a small backlog of records that are being cleared. Case status data can be found on the City’s reporting platform.
On February 1, Toronto Public Health (TPH) will join all other public health units across Ontario and implement the new mandatory and enhanced provincial Case & Contact Management system. This new technology tool modernizes and replaces the integrated Public Health Information System and is a central source for COVID-19 data in Ontario. The new system will allow TPH to more easily coordinate management of cases and contacts with all the other health units and better take advantage of the help available for case and contact management from the provincial work force.
Throughout the transition to the new system, TPH will continue to report daily increases in the total number of COVID-19 cases, new hospitalizations including ICU admissions and intubations, and information on new and total deaths. There may be some variability in these indicators as data quality issues are encountered and resolved. During this changeover process, health system capacity and percent positivity will be the only indicators updated on the COVID-19 monitoring dashboard, as all other updates will be temporarily paused until the transition to the new information system is completed.
