The City of Toronto is making a number of upgrades to Steeles Avenue East from Bayview Avenue to east of Townsend Road, they include:

  • Road resurfacing
  • Replacement of some damaged curbs and sidewalks
  • Safety and accessibility upgrades at six intersections including traffic signal improvements and changes to TTC bus stops

Road Resurfacing

The road from Bayview Avenue to east of Townsend Road will be resurfaced from curb to curb. This work will involve full road excavation and resurfacing.

Sidewalk Replacement & Accessibility Upgrades

Sections of sidewalk along Steeles Avenue East will be replaced in areas where needed.

TTC Bus Stop Improvements

TTC completed a review of the transit stops along this stretch of Steeles Avenue East, and noted multiple opportunities to improve pedestrian safety by consolidating transit stops to locations with protected pedestrian crossings. This work will also help reduce the frustrating “stop-and-go” feeling customers experience when riding buses with stops placed too close together. The TTC generally places transit stops to best balance customer access to transit services and customer journey times on transit services.

To improve pedestrian safety the following TTC stops will be removed:

  • Valloncliff Road
  • Paul Markway
  • Quail Valley Drive
  • Edgar Woods Road

The remaining TTC bus stops will be brought to a state of good repair.

Curb Radii Reductions

As part of the planned road work, there will be curb radii reductions at the following intersections:

  • Old English Lane
  • Tarbert Road
  • Olive Villa Court
  • Laureleaf Road
  • Canadiana Drive
  • Bestview Drive
  • Fairway Heights & Bluffwood Drive
  • Aspenwood Drive
  • Edgar Woods Road
  • Townsend Road

These reductions will improve pedestrian safety by:

  • Making it easier for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to see each other (by moving stop lines closer to the intersection, improving sightlines for drivers, and making pedestrians more visible).
  • Shortening the distance people have to walk to cross the street, reducing the time they are in the roadway.
  • Reducing vehicle turning speeds (resulting in less frequent and less serious collisions).
  • Creating more space for people to wait safely when crossing the street.

Curb Extensions

Curb extensions, or bump-outs, are sections where the sidewalk is extended into the road, reducing the width of the road. This design slows down traffic and makes crossing the street shorter and safer for pedestrians. The design also takes into account the needs of various City services, including emergency services, solid waste management, and snow removal. As part of the planned road work, there will be curb extensions at the following intersections:

  • Tarbert Road
  • Bestview Drive
  • Fairway Heights & Bluffwood Drive
  • Aspenwood Drive
  • Edgar Woods Road
