North York Community Council (2003-2006)
Community councils were established under the City of Toronto Act, 1997 as committees of City Council. Based on a geographic area of the city, each Community Council considers the City's business of a local nature at the community level, and provides a forum for local input into Council's decision-making process. Responsibilities include making recommendations to City Council on local planning and development matters, as well as neighbourhood matters including traffic plans, parking regulations, as well as exemptions to certain City by-laws such as sign, fence, ravine and tree by-laws. Effective December 1, 2003, City Council reduced the number of community councils from six to four, and adopted new community council boundaries. In July 2004, the Toronto North Community Council was renamed as North York Community Council.
