The Park Washroom Enhancement Program is a multi-year initiative to upgrade 125 park washrooms between 2025 and 2031. These improvements are designed to support year-round access, enhance the user experience and ensure facilities meet current accessibility standards. Depending on the type and scale of work needed, each washroom will either receive a major upgrade, a full rebuild, or a prefabricated replacement. In the interim, 38 washroom facilities at destination parks will receive an immediate refresh to improve quality and comfort, while detailed plans for their future upgrades are developed.

  • Summer 2025 to Winter 2026: Hire a consultant team to manage the program
  • Fall 2025: Washroom refresh projects start
  • Summer 2026: Washroom refresh projects complete
  • Fall 2026: Prefabricated, major upgrades and full rebuild washroom projects start
  • 2031: Prefabricated, major upgrades and full rebuild washroom projects complete

The timeline is subject to change.

Thirty-eight washroom facilities across 31 destination parks are being refreshed with immediate upgrades to improve overall quality and user comfort. The interim work will include painting, door replacements, new sinks, soap dispensers, dryers and flooring.

These upgrades are being implemented ahead of future, larger-scale improvements, the scope and scale of which will be determined at a later date.

Work is scheduled to take place primarily during the winter and early spring months, when most park washrooms are closed for the season. For washrooms that operate year-round, advance signage will be posted to notify park users of temporary closures. Construction at each park is expected to take approximately two weeks.

A prefabricated washroom is a fully built unit that is made off-site and then delivered and installed in the park. Because it is pre-assembled, installation is typically faster and less disruptive than traditional construction. These washrooms are modern, durable and designed to meet accessibility standards. All prefabricated washrooms will be designed for year-round use.

Prefabricated washrooms are generally suited for smaller or older facilities that require full replacement, or for park locations where space or site conditions make traditional construction more challenging.

A list of parks scheduled to receive prefabricated washrooms will be posted once finalized.

Major upgrades will be carried out on existing washrooms where the structure is in good condition and where heritage value or unique design features are present. These improvements will focus on substantial interior renovations, accessibility enhancements and essential repairs to bring the facility to a state-of-good-repair, while preserving its original character. The majority of upgraded washrooms will be converted for year-round use, where site conditions and servicing allow.

A list of park washrooms receiving major upgrades will be posted once finalized.

Some park washrooms will be fully rebuilt to replace facilities that are in poor condition or no longer meet the needs of park users. These new washroom buildings will offer increased capacity and enhanced features, which may include additional stalls, shower facilities or lockers. All rebuilt washrooms will be fully accessible and designed for year-round use.

Full rebuilds are generally suited for larger washrooms located in high-use or destination parks, or for facilities where the existing structure is beyond repair.

Community engagement will be carried out for the design of each new washroom facility, with the approach and timing determined on a site-by-site basis.

A list of park washrooms receiving full rebuilds will be posted once finalized.
